It’s strange to think that we spend almost a third of our lives sleeping yet a lot of us feel in a perpetual state of tiredness. Not having a restful night often means the next day we are easily irritated, struggle to concentrate and consume more sugary foods. Our mattresses play a significant part in the quality of our sleep and unfortunately the average mattress contains thousands of toxins and flame retardants that seep into our skin. Hence, finding the perfect mattress is not just about whether it is soft or firm but rather whether it is organic and natural so that it is not harmful whilst we rest.

We always look for brands that use non toxic materials such as 100% natural latex, untreated pure wool and organic cotton. The great thing about these materials is they are naturally flame retardant and resistant to dust mites meaning that no additional chemicals are required. A quick cheat sheet is to look out for the following acronyms:

  • GOLS (organic latex)
  • GOTS (organic textiles)
  • Oeko-Tex 100 (low VOCs)
  • Eco Institut (low VOCs and no flame retardants, heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates and formaldehyde)

Here are some of our picks to guarantee you a good night sleep

 Una Mattress – UK

There’s nothing nasty in an Una mattress. Their 100% certified organic materials mean there are no toxic-smelling fumes or harmful chemicals – you can lie back and breathe deeply and easily, right from the first night.

Remember to dispose of your old mattress consciously. There are companies such as Softlanding and Old Bed that will pick up your old mattress and recycle it, so it doesn’t just end up in landfill … meaning you’ll sleep better at night.
